Mat Sweeney is a director and composer based in downtown Los Angeles. He works with text, movement, music, and design to create original performance work, often staged in unexpected spaces, which he presents under the moniker four larks. He recently received Center Theatre Group's Sherwood Fellowship and several Ovation Awards for his work as a performance maker, director, and composer.
Recent projects include a promenade opera staged around the Getty Villa museum, a site-specific new music series with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra activating historic LA spaces, and a visual album adapted from ancient poetry.
At MacDowell, Sweeney conducted research for a new site-specific performance piece about libraries and sketched compositions for a new song cycle.
