Matthew Wamser writes fiction and essays. His work has been published in Salamander and The Missouri Review, where he was awarded the 2022 Jeffrey E. Smith Editors' Prize. He was also the recipient of the 2020 Henfield Prize and a 2021 Hopwood Award at the University of Michigan where he received his M.F.A. in creative writing.
While at MacDowell, he worked on a historical novel set in the 17th century and inspired by the picaresque form popular at that time. His work tends to blend fact and fiction, and this project is loosely based on the true story of a woman who survived her own execution.
