At MacDowell in 2002, Michael Russell was revising his novel, The Decline and Fall of the Megafauna. Most recently his short stories had appeared in such literary magazines as New England Review, Notre Dame Review, Third Coast, Pindeldyboz, and Salt Hill. He was shopping and seeking representation for his novel, as well as second novel entitled, Ridiculous Monsters, and a collection of short stories tentatively titled, Love Song of the Abdominable Snowman: And other Romantic Comedies. His short story, Smoke on the water, which originally appeared in the Spring 2000 issue of New England Review, was recently optioned by Kingdom Country Productions and will be adapted into a film.

During his 2005 residency. he continued work on his novel, The Social Insects.

Wood

Michael Russell worked in the Wood studio.

Wood Studio, given to the residency program by Mrs. Frederick Trevor Hill, was completed in 1913 in memory of Mrs. Hill’s mother, Helen Ogden Wood. Like Schelling Studio, the building is sided with large, overlapping pieces of hemlock bark.
