Michael Waters earned a B.A. and an M.A. at the College at Brockport-SUNY, an M.F.A. at the University of Iowa, and a Ph.D. at Ohio University. Waters’s numerous collections of poetry include Celestial Joyride (2016), Gospel Night (2011), the Los Angeles Times Book Prize finalist Darling Vulgarity (2006), Parthenopi: New and Selected Poems (2001), and Anniversary of the Air (1985). He edited the Selected Poems of A. Poulin Jr. (2001) and Dissolve to Island: On the Poetry of John Logan (1984). He also coedited the anthologies Contemporary American Poetry (2006) and Perfect in Their Art: Poems on Boxing from Homer to Ali (2003) and co-translated Carmelia Leonte’s Death Searches for You a Second Time (2003). His honors include fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation. In addition, he has received five Pushcart Prizes, and three Individual Artist Awards from the Maryland State Arts Council. Waters has taught at Salisbury University and currently teaches at Monmouth University and Drew University.

Marian MacDowell and friends originally named this studio in memory of Anna Baetz, the nurse who helped care for Edward MacDowell in the waning years of his life.
