Monroe Couper (1953-1994) grew up in Waynesboro, Virginia, and graduated from the University of Chicago. He became a professor of music at the Brooklyn College campus of Kingsborough Community College in 1980, where he taught music theory and electronic music and composed for orchestras and small ensembles, including percussion quartets. His last composition, In Memoriam, premiered in 1993 in Prague. Couper died at the age of 40 in a tragic ice climbing accident on Mount Washington in New Hampshire.
