Paloma Cernuda (1948–2003) was a visual artist. She was born in New York City but spent the first 16 years of her life in Argentina and Brazil before returning to the United States for her training. She received a B.F.A. from California State University, Long Beach in 1983 and an M.F.A. from Hunter College in 1985. She was a New York State Foundation for Arts fellow, 1987; National Education Association fellow, 1989; and a Brandywine Workshop visiting artist fellow, 1990. Many of her large charcoal drawings “feature abstracted vessels emerging from — and spinning in — amorphous, dark, and enigmatic environs.”

Cheney Studio was given to MacDowell by Mrs. Benjamin P. Cheney and Mrs. Karl Kauffman. Like Barnard Studio, Cheney is a low, broadly massed bungalow. Sited on a steep westward slope, its porches are supported on wooden posts and fieldstone with lattices.
