Patrick Comiskey, food, wine and spirit writer and critic, currently lives in Los Angeles. He is a Senior Contributor for Wine & Spirits Magazine and is the critic for all domestic wines from Washington, Oregon, New York State and elsewhere, contributing articles on California, Oregon and Washington wine, winegrowing, and wine culture. Comiskey is currently the chief wine columnist for The Los Angeles Times. He has also written for The San Francisco Chronicle, Food & Wine, and Bon Appetit.
Comiskey’s book American Rhone: How Maverick Winemakers Changed the Way Americans Drink (2016) was shortlisted for the Andre Simon Book Awards in 2017 and won the Gourmand Prize for Best New World Wine Book. In 2016 he served as development editor for Wine & Place: A Terroir Reader (2017), written by Tim Patterson and John Buechsenstein. Comiskey travels throughout the United States and around the world, tasting more than 3,000 wines every year. He judges several of the country’s wine competitions, including the San Francisco International and the Los Angeles International. In 2017, he served as chief American judge and contributor to the Six Nations Wine Challenge in Sydney, Australia. Comiskey also teaches wine classes at the University of California Los Angeles, and regularly moderates panels of viticulture and wine tasting, and the world’s wine regions. He is particularly interested in the ways in which wine is a medium for storytelling in different cultures.
