Philip Grange studied both privately and at the Dartington Summer School of Music with Peter Maxwell Davies between 1975 and 1981, and also with David Blake at York University between 1976 and 1983. Since then he has held the posts of Fellow in the Creative Arts at Trinity College, Cambridge (1985-1987) and Northern Arts Composer Fellow at Durham University, and lectured at Exeter University between 1989 and 2000. He is currently Professor of Composition at Manchester University, a post he has held since 2001.

Youngstown Studio was given to MacDowell by friends of Miss Myra McKeown in Youngstown, OH, where she promoted both art and music.
