Randolph Bates is an American writer and educator specializing in nonfiction writing and poetry. Bates received both his master’s and doctorate degrees from Tulane University, and then began teaching at Xavier, Harvard, Tulane, Loyola, Louisiana State University, the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts, St. Martin’s Episcopal School, and at writing programs in Montpellier, France, and Cork, Ireland. Bates has received several accolades for his work, including a MacArthur Foundation Endowment Residency, the Frank Vogel Scholarship, an Artist Fellowship in Literature from the State of Louisiana, a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and recognition of excellence in teaching from UNO and Harvard University. Bates has served as the editor of fiction writing for the publication Bayou Magazine for 15 years.

Originally built near MacDowell's Union Street entrance, the Barnard Studio — which was funded by Barnard College music students — was re-located to its current site in 1910.
