Robert Sanders (1906-1974) was awarded a Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to Assist Research and Artistic Creation for Music Composition in 1954. Among his many compositions were Sonata in Eb - Solo for Eb trombone with piano accompaniment, Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, When Lilacs Last In the Dooryard Bloom'd, and Square-Dance. Sanders became the youngest ever dean of Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music at the age of 32.

Van Zorn (formerly Kirby)

Robert Sanders worked in the Van Zorn (formerly Kirby) studio.

Constructed thanks to a bequest from Sarah L. Kirby, Kirby Studio was the last new building to be erected during Mrs. MacDowell’s leadership (1907-1951).
