During her three MacDowell Fellowships, Rosa Shand has worked on her novel Powleys, a novella to go with a collection of Southern stories to be published by Soho, and other projects.

Her novel The Gravity of Sunlight (2000) won the Jesse James Award for Best Fiction and the Stephen Turner Award for Best First Fiction as well as being named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. She has published over thirty stories in such journals as The Southern Review, Shenandoah, Southwest Review, The Massachusetts Review, and Chelsea.
