Ross Meckfessel is an artist and filmmaker who works primarily in Super 8 and 16mm film. His films often emphasize materiality and poetic structures while depicting the condition of modern life through an exploration of apocalyptic obsession, contemporary ennui, and the technological landscape.

His work has screened internationally and throughout the United States including in Toronto International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Open City Documentary Festival, San Francisco Cinematheque’s CROSSROADS Film Festival, Internationales Kurzfilm Festival Hamburg, and Curtas Vila Do Conde, among others.

His last film was shown in the 2023 New York Film Festival's Currents program and was listed as a "beautifully baffling subversion of the cinematic status quo" in The New York Times article on the festival. An essay on his short films will be published in issue no. 97 of Cinema Scope Magazine.

At MacDowell, Meckfessel filmed and processed 16mm film while researching and editing a new short film.

Ross Meckfessel worked in the Nef studio.

Nef Studio, the first entirely new studio built after 1937, was donated by esteemed photographer, explorer, author, and MacDowell Fellow Evelyn Steffanson Nef in 1992. Endowed funds for the studio’s maintenance in perpetuity and an annual Fellowship for photographers were given in addition to funds for construction.
