Royce Vavrek is a Canada-born, Brooklyn-based librettist and lyricist whose opera Angel’s Bone with composer Du Yun was awarded the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Music. His current projects include Fanny and Alexander, an adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s film, with composer Mikael Karlsson, for La Monnaie de Munt; Agnes, the story of the last woman to be executed in Iceland told through a contemporary lens with composer Daníel Bjarnason for Icelandic Opera; and two adaptations of novels: Thomas King’s Indians on Vacation composed by Ian Cusson for Edmonton Opera and Against the Grain, and George Saunders’s Lincoln in the Bardo composed by Missy Mazzoli for the Metropolitan Opera.

While at MacDowell, Royce worked on a new opera with Yotam Haber about the Golem of Prague.

Mansfield

Royce Vavrek worked in the Mansfield studio.

The Helen Coolidge Mansfield Studio was donated by graduates of the Mansfield War Service Classes for Reconstruction Aides. Helen Mansfield helped found the New York MacDowell Club.
