Sam Wiener studied architecture and art with, among others, Josef Albers and Willem deKooning and graduated with a B.F.A. from the Yale School of Fine Arts in 1951. Following three years in the U.S. Navy, Wiener spent a year working in Paris. He moved to New York City in 1955. As well as studio work and exhibits, he has realized some 80 commissions in various materials, collaborating with many of the country's leading architects. Since 1970 he has concentrated on studio work, teaching, and exhibiting in galleries and museums throughout the U.S. and abroad. Wiener has served on faculties of the School of Architecture, Columbia University, Cooper Union Art School, and Parsons School of Design. He has been a guest instructor and lecturer at numerous art schools, museums, and universities. He was a visiting artist at Anderson Ranch Art Centers in 1990, 1992 and 1993; a MacDowell Fellow in 1991; and a resident artist at the Banff Center for the Arts in 1997.

Sam Wiener worked in the Cheney studio.

Cheney Studio was given to MacDowell by Mrs. Benjamin P. Cheney and Mrs. Karl Kauffman. Like Barnard Studio, Cheney is a low, broadly massed bungalow. Sited on a steep westward slope, its porches are supported on wooden posts and fieldstone with lattices.
