During her 2009 MacDowell residency, Samantha Harvey worked on her second novel, All is Song (Jonathan Cape, 2012). She is a Reader in creative writing at Bath Spa University. Her first novel, The Wilderness, was shortlisted for the 2009 Orange Prize for Fiction and won the 2009 Betty Trask Prize. It was on the longlist for the 2009 Man Booker Prize.

In 2024, Harvey won the Booker Prize for her novel Orbital.

Marian MacDowell and friends originally named this studio in memory of Anna Baetz, the nurse who helped care for Edward MacDowell in the waning years of his life.
