Shanna Mahin is a high school dropout who rallied late despite her ninth grade English teacher's prediction of a lifetime of wasted potential. Her writing fellowships include MacDowell, the Norman Mailer Center, and PEN Center USA Emerging Voices, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, Writers at Work, and the Eda Kriseova Creative Nonfiction Fellowship at the Prague Summer Program, among others. Just like her main character in Oh! You Pretty Things, Shanna is third-generation Hollywood.

Shanna Mahin worked in the Irving Fine studio.

Youngstown Studio was given to MacDowell by friends of Miss Myra McKeown in Youngstown, OH, where she promoted both art and music. It was renamed Irving Fine Studio in 1972 in honor of Irving Fine, a distinguished composer, conductor, and teacher who was a MacDowell Fellow during the 1940s and 1950s.
