Discipline: Music Composition
Region: London, UK
MacDowell Fellowships: 1981, 1983

I was born and educated in the U.S.A. (b. 1943) in New York, but have lived in Europe since 1972 – first as a Fulbright Fellow in Warsaw, Poland (1972–74), and since 1974 in London where I work as a freelance composer, pianist, and conductor but tour worldwide. In 2018-19 I was visiting professor of composition at Florida State University (Tallahassee) but am now back in London.

My 75th Birthday was celebrated in London with a 24-hour concert of my solo, chamber, film, installation, concerto, and symphonic works performed at St. John’s, Smith Square from March 9 – 10.

Major commissions include the London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Proms (Royal Albert Hall, London), the Royal Festival Hall (London), Barbican Centre (London), New Music Biennale (UK), Birmingham Royal Ballet (UK), the National Portrait Gallery (London), the Calgary Philharmonic (Canada), Warsaw Autumn Festival, the Hilliard Ensemble (UK), the Smith Quartet (UK), pianist Stephen Kovacevich, percussionist Evelyn Glennie, harpsichordist Elisabeth Chojnacka, and the International Computer Music Association.

As a pianist I have recorded for many European radio networks, performed at Carnegie Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall (London), and Centre Pompidou (Paris). My conducting specialty is 20th and 21st century music and has included work with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (UK), London Sinfonietta, City of London Sinfonia, the Danish Chamber Orchestra, and members of the Berlin Philharmonic.

Beyond music I enjoy tennis, cycling, hiking, reading, travelling, art, and writing nonfiction.

Studios

New Jersey

Stephen Montague worked in the New Jersey studio.
