Stephen initiated a new body of paintings that marked a return to painting after two years of large-scale collaborative installation works with sculptor Wade Kavanaugh. He is a recipient of a 2006 Urban Artist Initiative grant, and is a 2007 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow.

Stephen Nguyen worked in the Cheney studio.
Cheney Studio was given to MacDowell by Mrs. Benjamin P. Cheney and Mrs. Karl Kauffman. Like Barnard Studio, Cheney is a low, broadly massed bungalow.
