As an electroacoustic composer and sound artist, Suk-Jun Kim has been examining the sense of place through his compositions and sound installations. His research themes includes imaginal listening, phenomenological approaches to listening and composition, and new approaches to sound and place. Kim has been awarded first prizes by the Bourges Competition, Metamorphoses, and CIMESP for his compositions and was a resident composer of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program in 2009. Kim is lecturer in Electroacoustic Music and Sound Art and programme director of MMus in Sonic Arts at the University of Aberdeen. Kim is also director of sonADA, an experimental music and performance festival in North East Scotland.

MacDowell

Suk-Jun Kim worked in the MacDowell studio.

Built in 1912, Pine Studio was renamed MacDowell Studio in 1943 in recognition of support from a group of Edward MacDowell’s music students. It was built as a composers’ studio and the stuccoed walls were intended to be soundproof.
