Susan Kouguell is a screenwriter and professor of screenwriting at Purchase College SUNY whose work is represented in international seminars, such as the Prague Film School in the Czech Republic. She is the recipient of many grants and fellowships from MacDowell, the Edward Albee Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, and the New York Foundation for the Arts, among others. Her award-winning short films are in the archives at the Museum of Modern Art and were included in the Whitney Museum Biennial. Kougell has worked as associate producer on two features, written voice-over narrations for Miramax Films, completed a dozen rewrite assignments for productions companies, and worked in the story and acquisitions departments at Paramount Picture, Warner Bros., and more. She is currently chair of her motion picture consulting company, Su-City Pictures East LLC, and a contributing writer for Script Magazine.

Funded by the Phi Beta Fraternity, a national professional fraternity of music and speech founded in 1912, Phi Beta Studio was built between 1929–1931 of granite quarried on the MacDowell grounds.
