Thomas Page McBee's debut memoir, Man Alive, won a Lambda award and was named a best book of the year by Kirkus and Publisher's Weekly. His follow-up, Amateur, was shortlisted for the UK’s Baillie-Gifford nonfiction book prize and the Wellcome Book Prize. In the course of reporting that book, McBee became the first trans man to fight in Madison Square Garden. He is currently developing an adaptation of Amateur for HBO.

His most recent television writing credit was the Glaad award-nominated season three of Netflix's The Umbrella Academy, where he architected and wrote the transition narrative for Elliot Page’s character, Viktor. His writing has also appeared in the New York Times, The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, and GQ.

While at McDowell, he researched and wrote a chapter for his forthcoming book, Trans Time Travel (Scribner), and additionally completed an outline for a pilot in development at HBO.

Marian MacDowell and friends originally named this studio in memory of Anna Baetz, the nurse who helped care for Edward MacDowell in the waning years of his life.
