Playwright Mia Chung Dives into Television During MacDowell Residency

September 6, 2024

Playwright Mia Chung will talk about and share her work at the next installment of MacDowell Downtown tomorrow, September 6, at the Monadnock Center for History and Culture in Peterborough. The Friday presentation begins at 7:30 p.m., with doors opening at 7.

During her residency, Chung is balancing work on a play about measurement and value focusing on three MIT juniors facing the uncertainties of post-college life and a music-theatre work about the Korean War with research and development for a TV show she has created for FX.

“It’s very different from writing a play,” Chung said recently of television writing. "As the show creator I am responsible for communicating not just the show story, but also my vision for the show's visual and thematic scope." In the first couple of weeks of her residency, she’s already found inspiration in interactions with her cohort. “It’s been extremely stimulating to talk about my work with other artists,” Chung said, noting that her conversations with composers and filmmakers, especially, has led her to consider a wider range of expressive tools to help her TV collaborators see and hear the world of the show.

The playwright, whose family reunion drama Catch as Catch Can was produced at Playwrights Horizons, is an alum of the Ma-Yi Writers Lab and New Dramatists, and has received multiple awards, commissions, and residencies—including the 2023 Whiting Award. Her work has been produced by the Royal Court Theatre in the U.K. and the National Theatre Center of Korea, as well as theatres in NYC and across the U.S., including Page 73, the Public Theater, the National Asian American Theatre Company, and Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company.
