We’re thrilled to welcome beloved Argentinian author Mariana Enríquez (Our Share of Night) to The Center in celebration of her new collection of unnerving tales, A Sunny Place for Shady People. She will be joined in conversation by her translator Megan McDowell for a discussion about writing characters who seek meaning and hope against a backdrop of horror. Melissa Lozada-Oliva, author of peluda, Dreaming of You, and the forthcoming short story collection Beyond Reasonable Doubt, Jesus is Alive!, will moderate.
Considered one of Latin America’s “most original imaginations” (The Bookseller), Enríquez is known for blurring the line between real life and dark imagination. The twelve stories in her latest book expand on that theme, examining how ordinary people, particularly women, find their lives turned inside out. Set in Argentina, these tales include a town teeming with ghosts, a family whose faces melt away, and a hotel haunted by a girl who meets a dark end in a rooftop water tank.
Learn how Enríquez uses the supernatural to illuminate the shadows of contemporary life and expose the core of human experience. A book signing will follow the event.
