MacDowell in the Schools 2019
Since 1996, this program has been bringing the creative process to the classroom, and has also invited the classroom into the studio. Students in grade school, high school and college in the Monadnock Region all benefit from the time and expertise of MacDowell Fellows as they share their passion and their work with the next generations of artists and art lovers. So far this year, more than 200 students from elementary grades through high school have welcomed MacDowell Fellows to their classrooms or visited the Fellows in their studios. The following MacDowell Fellows volunteered their time during their residencies in 2019 to meet with student artists: Composer Philippe Bodin, visual artist Paul Collins, playwright Sarah DeLappe, visual artist Yewen Dong, playwright Stephen Gregg, composer Victor Marquez-Barrios, composer Martha Mooke, writer Vint Virga, performance artist Ed Woodham, and writer Chavisa Woods.
Composer Victor Marquez-Barrios visited with the Intro to Music Theory and Keyboarding Class at ConVal Regional High School in January.
Writer Chavisa Woods met with 13 ConVal Regional High School students enrolled in Ashley Vanat’s Young Adult Fiction course in the spring.
Writer Vint Virga gave a presentation titled "From California to Zambia: Life On the Road as a Wildlife Conservation Veterinarian" to 80 students from Carol Young and Moira Milne’s AP and Honors Science classes in the Lucy Hurlin Theatre at ConVal High School.
Visual artist Paul Collins opened Cheney studio to a handful of ConVal Regional High School art students and their teachers in April.
Andy's Summer Playhouse producing artistic director (and 2017 Colony Fellow) Jared Mezzocchi brought a group of young actors to MacDowell to assist playwright in residence Stephen Gregg in reading his play-in-progress "Carina Comes Out."
Composer Martha Mooke showed a group of student composers from The Walden School her studio, demonstrated her electronic components, and let a student try his hand at playing her viola and manipulate its sound.
In October, Yewen Dong opened Firth Studio to a handful of ConVal High School art students, explained her working process and answered questions. (An Putnam photo)
Peterborough Elementary School 4th graders from Mrs. Compton’s and Mrs. Lavoie’s classes visited performance artist Ed Woodham in Adams Studio to meet Ed, learn about MacDowell, and make ripped-paper collages.
